Review of Fundamentals of Software Architecture: An Engineering Approach

Rating: 5 out of 5.

If you’re earlier in your career and wondering how to become an architect, this book has a lot of guidance on what skills are needed – and they aren’t all technical! There are great recommendations for practice – including the art of negotiation and the 20-minute rule for growing in breadth.

If you’ve been an architect a long time, there are some tidbits that might be good reminders on how to keep our coding skills sharp and also how to use architecture katas to practice our skills.

Having had to make architectural decisions throughout my career at various small-to-mid-size companies, it was good to see some of the architectural styles that were included and how we’ve evolved away from them. It was also good to see how each of the architectural styles rated in different categories and seeing the trade-offs with each architecture.
